You're Not Alone in a Small Michigan Town

Alpena, Michigan

Story Narrative:

"I'm originally from a larger town around Detroit, but I moved for work into these smaller towns in North Dakota, and now Alpena, Michigan, and what I find best about small towns is how whenever you need something, no one hesitates to stop and help you out. There's this sense of security in a smaller town, that you're not alone, but you can be alone.

You can get away from things if you want. I love living in a smaller town. There's a lot of history, and I like to make some of my own roots and history here in Alpena. Thank you!"

Part of the "Stories from Main Street" project--an effort to collect stories about small-town life across the United States. The project was the brainchild of the Smithsonian's "Museum on Main Street" program, an initiative that brings traveling exhibitions about subjects of national importance to small towns across America.
