Ancestors and Lake City, Minnesota--Katie Himanga

As told by Katie Himanga
Lake City, Minnesota

Story Narrative:

"My grandmother, her name was Marie La Pointe, and the story that came was that she came to the area by Voyageur canoe. Well, I now realize that when she traveled here and she was 15 years old, she was a sent-for bride. She was sent to come here and live and marry someone whose wife had died, which she did. She probably came through Wisconsin - down to Prairie du Chien and then they took a right and came up river . . ."

This story was collected as part of a collaborative effort to record the state of American lakes, rivers, and waterways as well an attempt to uncover what water means to Americans. Listen to other stories recorded by the Minnesota Humanities Center for their We Are Water MN initiative, an outgrowth of our national traveling exhibition "Water/Ways."
