Pulling Together in a Small Town, Missouri
Story Narrative:
What does living in a small town teach you?
"I think that living in a small town teaches you to pull together more often than not. A lot of times when you don't have larger communities around you it tends to make you rely on the people who are near you for help when things go wrong. I remember in 2004 in May, we had a tornado rip through the little town of 700 people that I live in and it was a horrible, horrible disaster zone. At one point the people were all out cleaning things up and searching for things that had been lost for people and the Red Cross pulled into town.
They were only there for a matter of about two or three hours and then packed up and pulled out of town because they said that the community was so self sufficient that they didn't feel that they were needed there and they could be doing more good elsewhere in other communities that had been affected by the tornado's as well. So, it really, I think, teaches you a lesson in how to work together as a team and to rely on what you already have at your resources."
