The Pittsburg Ice Cream Company, Kansas

Franklin, Kansas

Story Narrative:

What's your favorite memory of living in a small town?

"I'm 42 years old, and I live in a small town called Pittsburg, Kansas, and one of my favorite memories of growing up here as a child was going to the PICCO, which was Pittsburg Ice Cream Company, and it was about a block away from my elementary school. At that time we were allowed to leave our elementary school to eat lunch. So I, for a special treat, once in a while, would get to take a dollar or two and go to PICCO. And they made grilled cheese sandwiches, and they had cherry lime aids and I think for a nickel or two you could get a flavored ice. Cherry Ice or Grape Ice and then sometimes we'd get a pack of trading cards and walk back to school. We also could get containers of ice cream to take home and so our parents, once in a while for a treat, would get a carton of handmade chocolate chip ice cream for the freezer. It's no longer there because the people who owned it did not want to pass it on to anyone else. So when they retired they just basically bulldozed it down. We only have our memories of that place. But they are really good."
