Love and Fear of Water on Marco Island, Florida

As told by Sandra Baer

Story Narrative:

Submitted as part of the Women Mind the Water Digital Stories Project.

"Hello. My name is Sandra Baer, and I live on Marco Island. And, I'm a woman of the water. I live on an island surrounded by water. It's life giving and life taking. I see the beauty of the island I live on, the lush vegetation, beautiful flowering bushes, and I also see the dark side when the clouds roll in, thunderstorms occur, lightning, and it's very worst--a hurricane. This beautiful paradise so quickly can become a hazard. I still love this island though, and I love the water.

I see the wonder of the water--how it feeds our lawns and bushes and trees, the pleasure it gives our tourists who come to the beautiful white beaches, the fishing, the clear water we have to drink, then there's that fear when the thunderstorms roll in, and we're faced with hurricane conditions, the mandatory evacuations, and then it's over, and we return, and the sun comes out again, and once again, our island is a beautiful paradise. That's my story about water."
