Knowing Neighbors in Lewiston, Maine

Lewiston, Maine

Story Narrative:

"Living in a small town like Lewiston, one of the key things that we learned was that you knew your neighbor, which I find something very different today. No matter what happened--joys or sorrows--it seems that we were all there for each other, and we knew each other's names, and we knew when something unusual, was not right in the area, so we were able to all share."

Part of the "Stories from Main Street" project--an effort to collect stories about small-town life across the United States. The project was the brainchild of the Smithsonian's "Museum on Main Street" program, an initiative that brings traveling exhibitions about subjects of national importance to small towns across America.
