Helping People in Alpena, Michigan

Alpena, Michigan

Story Narrative:

"So, I live in Alpena, Michigan, and I'm impressed with our small town because when there's somebody in our community that has a very serious illness and has very high medical expenses, there's always friends and family that put together a spaghetti dinner or some kind of fundraising food event, and the turn out is always tremendous, and people are very generous in helping each other out."

Part of the "Stories from Main Street" project--an effort to collect stories about small-town life across the United States. The project was the brainchild of the Smithsonian's "Museum on Main Street" program, an initiative that brings traveling exhibitions about subjects of national importance to small towns across America.
