Great, Great, Great Grandma's Recipes

Lawson, Missouri

Story Narrative:

"I have the pleasure of actually having a lot of recipes that were passed down throughout my family from generation to generation. We have a cookbook that belonged to my great-great-great-grandmother and it's very interesting because over the years we have photocopied it, it's all written in her handwriting. And we photocopy the cookbook and passed it out to each of the kids, the grandkids, the great grandkids, down the line. Some very good recipes. A lot of people think of food in the 19th century as being fairly bland, there was very little variety, in actuality, I would go so far as to say, they actually had more variety in their food than we have today.

A lot more flavor to it in some ways. And of course it was all cooked on a wood stove, so it absorbed that wood stoke flavor as well. It's really neat because we'll get together for family gatherings and we all have brought recipes that were from great-great-great-grandma. Some very interesting things, breads, desserts, meat dishes. What today we would call a casserole, at the time they called them baked puddings. And so, we have all of those very, very interesting. It wasn't uncommon at the time to have up to 20 to 25 different dishes on the table, multiple meats, multiple breads, and multiple desserts, as well as beverages."
