Catching Crayfish in Small-town Indiana

Cowan, Tennessee

Story Narrative:

Speaker 1: What is your favorite memory of living in a small town?

Speaker 2: Well, where I was, was right in the middle of town. It was right across from the street. You go across the street and go to the river, and there was fishing there. The street was actually a highway that went from Detroit to Chicago. You'd see a lot of trucks going by, and growing up wondering what's the rest of the world is like seeing all these vehicles going by and stuff. Then, for an optional time you could figure out ideas of how to have fun, you know, come up with your own creative ways to have fun.

Speaker 1: So you'd just go to the river and spend time there, and watch the trucks go by?

Speaker 2: Sometimes, yeah. Catch the crayfish.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I've done that. Speaker 2: Turtles.

Speaker 1: Yeah. How many people live in your town, about?

Speaker 2: The town I grew up in, in Michigan City, there's about 250 people.

Speaker 1: Yeah, so a small place.

Speaker 2: Yeah. Didn't have any movies. Didn't even have a doctor. We had to go to the next town over to go to the doctor.

Speaker 1: Yeah.
