Buffalo Island: Horse Collar, Arkansas

As told by Buffalo Island Central EAST Students
Buffalo Island, Arkansas

Story Narrative:

A leather and wooden animal collar that is shaped like a teardrop.

Red Palmer describes the use of a horse collar on display in the Buffalo Island Museum in Arkansas. This story is connected to Buffalo Island Central EAST's online story map From Swamp to Farmland and interactive exhibits at the Buffalo Island Museum, which both trace the the history of agriculture in the area. Either click on the video to watch it or follow the instructions below to make it magically come to life like it does in the Museum by scanning this "Horse Collar" picture in the HP Reveal app.

Red Palmer (00:05): That's called a collar. You hook a chain. See here's a chain that's hooked to this and this and that. But you hooked a chain here and here. I went back to the plow or disc or harrow or whatever you had behind your team, and this was against their shoulder here. They pushed. They say they pull, but really they push with that shoulder, and it push and pulls the plow or the cultivator.
