Buffalo Island: Hay Cradle, Arkansas

As told by Buffalo Island Central High School, EAST Students
Buffalo Island, Arkansas

Story Narrative:

Two older gentlemen stand in a museum room filled with old farming tools.

A hay cradle is not a common object if you've never been on a farm but locals Rudy and Doodle explain it using the one on display in the Buffalo Island Museum in Arkansas. This story is connected to Buffalo Island Central High School's EAST program and its online story map From Swamp to Farmland. They created interactive exhibits at the Buffalo Island Museum, which trace the the history of agriculture in the area. Either click on the video to watch it or follow the instructions below to make it magically come to life like it does in the Museum by scanning this "Hay Cradle" picture in the HP Reveal app. The app "uses advanced image recognition [augmented reality] to blend the real-world with rich interactive content, such as videos and animations, called 'Auras'".

Narrator (00:00): The hay cradle is a tool that was used to harvest hay and pile it at the same time. The hay cradle consists of a scythe with an arrangement of fingers that catch and pile the hay as it's harvested.

Doodle (00:23): I hate to think about these. You cut hay with that.

Rudy (00:29): They bundled it back then, and they tied it up.

Doodle (00:34): You would cut it up. That's the way you could get your hay and stuff back then.
