Youth Ambassadors-Roger Outlaw Oral History

As told by YAG Curator
St. Joseph - Benton Harbor, Michigan

Story Narrative:

Roger Outlaw grew up farming but his life was drastically changed after being drafted into the Vietnam War as a young man. His compelling story is showcased in this oral history "trailer." The full oral history can be found at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center in St. Joseph, Michigan.

During the summer of 2016, local students took part in the Youth Ambassadors program at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, developed as part of the Smithsonian Institution's Youth Access Grant initiative. The students researched, conducted and transcribed the oral histories of area locals. As Stories from Main Street participants, they created summary "movie trailers" for each interview so that museum visitors would be able to understand the content of the oral history in brief and fun videos.
