Women in the Workforce, from Yesterday to Today

Rolla, Missouri

Story Narrative:

Inspired by The Way We Worked exhibition:

"What inspired me as a young woman after I got out of high school was education. Education opened a door to a profession and a role I've held for 35, 36 years now and that's nursing. Even though in 1972 I was given two choices after high school, teaching or nursing I'm still glad I chose nursing. When you think back, the limitations of women in that day is really quite liberating now to know that really we're not constrained anymore.

I've taught my daughter that opening the future for her is through education and she is doing that and she is doing it in a non-traditional career choice. She's at S & T pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. Comes naturally to her and I'm incredibly proud of her. Just thinking on reflection on women in the workforce over years we've come a long way from my mother being very intimidated in 1972 to work outside of the home to my daughter pursuing a career and being passionate about her skills and ability. It's just amazing and tremendous to me."
