Visiting Great Grandparents in Mullen, Nebraska

Mullen, Nebraska

Story Narrative:

What's your favorite memory of living in a small town?

"Ever since I was younger, every other weekend, my grandparents and I would head deep into the Sandhills, to Mullen, Nebraska, to visit my great grandparents. The drive from Cozad to North Platte, then north to Mullen, seem to last for days. The weekends that we visited there would always be a Husker game on, and as I ran around the living room, my grandparents and great grandma would be yelling at the TV while my great grandpa would sit in the living room. If there wasn't a Husker game on that weekend, they would play bridge while I ran down the hill they lived on to the park. By the time I was ten, I declared these trips to Mullen to be extremely boring. At the time I was the only kid that would be there, so I was always alone, but even when there were other kids there, it still was extremely boring.

We would walk to the pool, then to the other places in this small town that were worth walking to. We really started going up to Mullen after my great grandma passed away from lung cancer. My great grandpa was often alone. He ended up coming to the nursing home in Cozad. Every day I would walk to the nursing home after school and spend an hour talking to him. His stories were amazing. They were about anything and everything. When he passed away, we ended up back in Mullen, cleaning out his house. It was then I realized how much I loved visiting them."
