Raising a Family in Portland, Michigan

Alpena, Michigan

Story Narrative:

What's your favorite memory of living in a small town?

"Yes. I grew up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. When I got married, we ended up raising our family in a small town west of Grand Rapids, Michigan, called Portland. It's a city of about 4,000 people, very small, very different from what I was used to. We chose it because we wanted a nice, pure upbringing for our kids. They had good schools. You learned that everyone knows everyone, and everyone knows your kids. The teachers know the history of each kid and know the family. They tend to get a really good education. The main thing there in Portland, I would say, for pastime would be football in the football season. There were some kids playing sports and some with bands that played in the school band, the high school band. That was a big part of my kids and their upbringing."
