More Livestock Than People in Nebraska

Cozad, Nebraska

Story Narrative:

Talk about life in your town.

"Growing up in a rural community may not mean a lot to other people, but to us it's our life. I live in a town where there is more livestock than people, and sometimes it can get really boring. I also think I pass more farm equipment than your average fuel saving sedan. We are a community that thrives and survives on our land or the land around us and what it can produce. Most kids started out going to school with all their friends right there with them. Well, I did sort of, if you consider your siblings your friends. Since we live so far out in the country, my parents enlisted me and my other siblings in country school. I spent grades kindergarten through fifth out there, and I loved almost every minute of it. We only had about 10 kids in each grade and spent most of our time outside playing.

When I hit the sixth grade, I finally got to come into town and meet new people and experience new things. The change from country school to town was very different, and sometimes I still miss our little classes. What's there to do around here? A lot of us find ourselves asking this question almost every day. To be honest, there isn't much at all to do. We used to have a movie theater, but it closed down a couple years ago, so now we have to travel out of town to catch a new release. We have a paintball place that I hear is pretty fun, but I personally have never been there. I live like 10 miles out of town, so my family and I have a couple ATVs that we ride pretty often. Our town also has a celebration once a year called Heydays. It is pretty fun and lasts for a few days, so it give a little bit of excitement in the fall."
