First Job at Lake Store at Yellowstone Nat'l Park--Elspeth Allen

As told by Elspeth Allen
Pinedale, Wyoming

Story Narrative:

"My first real job was when I was 19. I worked at Lake Store in Yellowstone National Park and it took me three days to travel from Michigan to this job. I took a plane to Denver, a bus to Idaho Falls, and then from Idaho Falls the Hamilton store's incorporated picked me up to take me to their office, and then I road the bread truck from West Yellowstone into Lake. It was just awesome to see mountains for the first time, and elk, and I liked it so much I did it four more summers, but it didn't take me three days to get there."

This story was collected in conjunction with the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program and its national traveling exhibition "The Way We Worked" when it was on view at the Sublette County Public Library in Pinedale, Wyoming, in 2018. This story is part of the "Be Here: Main Street" story collection, intended to capture Americans' stories about their neighborhoods, waterways, towns, traditions, and personal experiences.
